Abstract

Research shows that voice pitch plays a significant role in leadership selection and that more masculine traits, including voice pitch, are typically associated with success in leadership roles. Our study sought to determine whether participants display a preference for male leaders with lower-pitched or masculine voices.  Additionally, we examined if there was a difference in participant ratings of voice by sex, and if male and female participants differ in leadership ratings of voice as a function of sex and gender of a voice. The results of this study found that participants rated men’s voices high, but the female feminine voice received the highest average rating overall. Different aspects of these findings both aligned with and contradicted previous literature in a variety of ways but can ultimately be understood through the lens of gender role congruity and the influence of androgyny and gender norms in a male-dominated, hierarchical environment.
